Gelco Damper Repair: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
Gelco damper repair in Orlando typically runs $220 – $410 installed, and most swaps are done in under 90 minutes once we’re on-site. That price covers the replacement damper assembly, hardware, and labor, with a written price locked in before we touch anything. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: a draft they can’t explain, a utility bill that crept up, or a damper handle that suddenly spins without catching anything.
Gelco dampers are common in older Orlando homes because they were the go-to throat damper for local fireplace installers through the 1990s and early 2000s. When the cast-iron frame warps or the pivot rod shears, the failure is rarely subtle for long. You’ll feel it in the living room first, but the real cost shows up on the cooling bill, because that open throat gives your conditioned air a straight shot up the flue.
We’re an independent chimney service company, not affiliated with Gelco, but we stock their most common replacement sizes on the truck. If you’re calling us, chances are good we can match and install the part the same visit.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco made two main throat damper lines we still see regularly in Orlando homes: the original cast-iron series (the 61cc and 61x sizes, which cover the typical 36-inch and 42-inch firebox openings) and the later cast-aluminum series that replaced them in the mid-2000s. The repair path differs depending on which one you have, and the easiest way to find out is to look up into the firebox with a flashlight and check the damper frame for a stamped number.
The compatibility gotcha most people miss: the 61cc and 61x use different pivot rod diameters, so a replacement rod that fits one will not seat in the other. We check this on-site before writing up any parts quote, because ordering the wrong rod is a two-week headache you don’t need in July. Here in Central Florida, the heat and humidity also age the cast-iron frames faster than you’d see in drier climates. Surface rust is normal and usually harmless, but when the frame ears that hold the pivot rod crack, the damper is done and needs a full replacement rather than a rebuild.
For the aluminum series, most repair jobs come down to a stripped handle or a broken cable. The original Gelco cable runs about $40 – $65 as a part, and the aftermarket equivalent we keep from our supplier runs in the same range. The cast-iron replacement damper itself, OEM or quality aftermarket, runs $90 – $175 depending on the size, and both hold up about the same here.
We work with Gelco, DuraFlex, HeatShield, and other trade brands, but we match the part to what’s already installed, not what happens to be closest on the truck. You always get the part number and price on the written estimate before any work starts, so there’s no mystery swap.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle spins freely in either direction without stopping. This is the classic stripped-handle or sheared-setscrew failure. The handle is no longer connected to the pivot rod, so the damper plate isn’t moving at all, even though the handle feels like it’s doing something.
- You can feel a draft when the damper is closed. A warped cast-iron frame or a plate that no longer seats flush leaves a permanent gap. In Orlando, you’ll notice this most on humid summer nights when the AC is running and the air in the room feels heavy.
- The damper plate is stuck open or closed. If the plate rusted onto the frame or the pivot rod snapped inside the cast ears, the plate won’t budge. Don’t force it; a snapped rod means the damper is now resting against the frame under tension, and cranking the handle can break off pieces of the frame itself.
- Black soot or creosote streaks around the damper edges. If the plate isn’t sealing, smoke finds the gap and leaves a telltale stain. This is different from normal creosote accumulation (the flammable tar buildup a sweep removes), and it points to a mechanical sealing problem rather than a cleaning issue.
- A clunking or rattling noise near the firebox when you operate the handle. The pivot rod has likely worked loose from the plate. In some cases this is a $20 hardware fix; in others, the rod has wallowed out the plate hole and the whole assembly needs replacement.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Orlando, you should expect a Gelco damper replacement to run between $220 and $410 installed. The range breaks down roughly like this:
- Replacement damper assembly (OEM or quality aftermarket): $90 – $175
- Pivot rod and hardware kit: $20 – $45
- Replacement cable and handle (if needed): $40 – $75
- Labor and fireplace cleanup: $70 – $115
The spread comes down to your specific size and whether you have the original cast-iron or the later aluminum series. A full cast-iron assembly replacement runs at the upper end because the frame usually has to be removed and the firebox opening dressed before the new one seats properly. A simple handle or cable repair stays at the bottom of the range.
Every repair we do carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That means a written guarantee on every repair, and if it fails inside a year, we return and fix it free. The quote you approve before we start is the price you pay, full stop. We don’t add a door charge, a fuel surcharge, or a “while we were up there” surprise line item.

There are a couple of things worth checking yourself if you’re trying to figure out the problem before anyone gets on a ladder. Shine a light up into the firebox and look at the damper plate and frame. If you see a clearly snapped cable or a handle that’s spinning on a stripped collar, you’ve confirmed the failure. That’s useful information when you call us.
But swapping a Gelco damper is not a YouTube weekend project. The damper sits at the base of the chimney throat, usually in a cramped cast-iron frame that’s been heat-cycling for twenty years. If the plate drops while you’re working under it, that’s a lot of cast iron falling into your firebox (and onto your hands). Getting the new frame to seat square also matters for smoke pull, and a crooked install means you’ll get smoke rolling back into the room the first time you light a fire. That’s a call we’d rather take before the install than after.

FAQs
In our experience, the original cast-iron Gelco dampers last 15 to 25 years in Central Florida before the frame warps or the pivot ears crack, while the later aluminum series tend to fail at the cable or handle first and may need replacements every 8 to 15 years. The humidity in Orlando accelerates surface rust, but the real killer is normal heat cycling combined with years of creosote sitting on the plate edge. If yours is at the upper end of that range and you’re already feeling a draft, call (904) 822-8172 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether a repair is worth it.
Yes, in a lot of cases a Gelco damper can be repaired with a new cable, handle, or pivot rod, which keeps the job under $150 in most Orlando homes. The deciding factor is whether the cast frame itself is intact; if the ears that hold the rod are cracked or the plate won’t seat flat, repair is a band-aid and a full replacement is the only honest recommendation. We’ll show you a photo of the frame so you can see the difference yourself before you decide.
Most Gelco damper repairs and replacements are done in 60 to 90 minutes on-site, including removing the old assembly, dressing the firebox opening if needed, and testing the new damper’s full range of motion. We’ll text you photos of the finished install, per The Relay Visibility Guarantee, so you can see the work from the firebox even if you’re not standing over our shoulder. Call (904) 822-8172 to schedule a visit at a time that works for you.
We stock the most common Gelco replacement sizes, hardware kits, cables, and handles on our trucks, so the majority of damper repairs in Orlando are done the same visit without waiting on a parts order. If you have an uncommon firebox size, we’ll source the exact OEM or quality aftermarket equivalent and give you a written ETA with the quote. Either way, you get a firm installed price before we order anything.
